Our Story & Origins

Safeguarding Elephants, Mitigating Conflict

Elephant Monitors Assam (EMA) is a registered grassroots-based organization formed as an alliance of reputed elephant rescuers, activists, and conservationists of Assam. We intend to safeguard our elephants and mitigate the rising human-elephant conflict in Assam.

Our alliance brings together traditional generational knowledge and modern research. Managing Trustee Shyamanta Ram Phookun comes from the lineage of renowned freedom fighter of Assam and elephant expert, Tarun Ram Phookun. Having grown up in the company of elephants, Shyamanta is a living encyclopedia on all things elephants and an Assam government recognized human-animal conflict management expert.

Founder and Director Shaheen Ahmed, an academic and researcher by profession, established EMA out of deep concern over the depleting natural resources and escalating human-elephant encounters in her home state.

How We Protect Elephants & Communities

A multi-faceted approach combining field rescue, community protection, and policy advocacy.

Emergency Rescue & Rehabilitation

Led by veteran rescuers like Faruk Ali (Digboi) and Bedanta Gogoi (Golaghat), our team provides rapid response to rescue injured, trapped, or orphaned Asian elephants, leopards, slow lorises, and rare reptiles.

Policy Advocacy & Govt Engagement

We petition state leaders including the Forest Minister of Assam and local MLAs to secure medical aid, remove dangerous/dead radio collars (such as Durga's case), and enforce corridor protection laws.

Human-Elephant Coexistence

Working directly with agricultural villagers in Golaghat and high-conflict zones to establish early warning tracking networks, mitigating crop damage and preventing human and elephant fatalities.

Research & Public Awareness

Combining academic research by scholars like Shaheen Ahmed and literary advocacy by Samiran Xopun to educate the public and publish critical conservation reports in national media.

Our Mission

To provide immediate, effective field intervention, rescue injured wild elephants, protect human lives in conflict zones, and advocate for long-term ecological corridor preservation in Assam.
